Japan posted a record month of imports in January as the country continues to rely on the fuel to meet the post-Fukushima energy gap.

Finance Ministry data shows the world’s largest LNG market took in 8.15 million tonnes of LNG, up 28.2% from the 7.55 million tonnes imported in January 2010.

Japan has seen LNG demand skyrocket as nearly all of its nuclear plants have shut down following the earthquake that crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and sparked nationwide safety concerns.
