India is urging the US to relax rules covering LNG exports as the energy hungry Asian giant seeks cheaper Henry Hub-linked contracts.

The Petroleum & Natural Gas Ministry is trying to secure approvals from the US for shipments to India and has asked the Foreign Ministry to intervene.

“The Petroleum Ministry has asked the Ministry of External Affairs (in India) to take up the matter with appropriate authorities in the US government,” Junior Petroleum Minister RPN Singh told the Indian parliament.

Indian companies would like to import LNG from the numerous proposed liquefaction projects in the US.
