Floating LNG production projects are all the rage.
Public confirmation by Malaysia’s Petronas last week of its sanction for a 1.2 million tonnes per annum unit has given the sector yet another shot in the arm.
Classification society Lloyds Register, which is gearing up to launch a set of FLNG safety rules to guide development of this next-generation technology, believes the sector is expanding fast.
“The last count is that there are about 16 identified projects that will come on over the next 10 years,” said head of business development Olivier Boijoux at this month’s World Gas Conference in Malaysia.
“A year ago we were talking about only five, so it is really growing rapidly with a great variety of size and capacity.”
