OceanFleet Shipping and shipowning affiliate Oceanic Illsabe have turned to a US appeals court to challenge their $2.7m pollution penalty before a US appeals court.
The Greek manager and 29,500-dwt general cargoship Ocean Hope (built 1996) have filed papers with the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, questioning the conviction and sentence.
As TradeWinds has reported, the two companies were sentenced in January after a trial that focused on allegations that senior engineers on the ship had concealed the use of a "magic pipe" to discharge heavy oil sludge for months.
