Open-registry countries Liberia and the Marshall Islands are worrying about the consequences of this week’s diplomatic surprise — Panama’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China.
Panama has long been the most important diplomatic supporter of the rival Republic of China, Taiwan, but changed sides in the context of Beijing’s increasing pressure on Taiwan since last year’s election of president Tsai Ing-wen, whose party leans towards formal independence.
