The US Supreme Court on 30 March upheld a past court ruling that ordered a unit of Venezuelan refiner Citgo to pay dozens of millions of dollars in compensation to the US and Tsakos Shipping and Trading over an oil spill 16 years ago.
Citgo Asphalt Refining Co (Carco) failed to convince the judges that it did not carry responsibility for the incident, in which the 60,900-dwt Athos I (built 1983, scrapped 2008) spilled 264,000 gallons of heavy crude oil after striking an abandoned anchor at the bottom of the Delaware river.
