Steamship Mutual seems to be developing a new speciality — mega-containerships — to add to an established position as a club of choice for many cruiseship owners.
The club added the 21,413-teu OOCL Hong Kong (built 2017) to the portfolio of insured vessels earlier this year as the biggest boxship yet afloat was delivered from a South Korean shipyard.
Leviathans from Mediterranean Shipping Co and CMA CGM have pushed the average size of new containerships being entered in the club to 108,000 gross tons (gt), although the average size for existing boxship tonnage is 46,700 gt.
