A first-hand account of what it is like to be on the receiving end of an oily water discharge prosecution came from Stefanos Angelakos, of bulker operator Angelakos (Hellas).
He told the conference that it went without saying that an owner trying to fight prosecution needed not only the support of his club but the wider International Group.
Angelakos said he had a “certain degree of confidence” ahead of the 2016 trial, as the US had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the discharge was in the course and scope of crew members' employment and performed for the benefit of the employer.
