The European Union looks set to boost the fight against West Africa piracy with a new scheme for security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The bloc has approved a pilot project called Coordinated Maritime Presences (CMP) to tackle the criminal scourge after a failure of local governments to reduce attacks on vessels.
Nigeria has pledged to wipe out piracy in the region this year with new investment, but kidnappings are still running at record highs.
