Norwegian shipping executive Alf Clausen has died at 80.

Monaco-based Clausen worked for shipowner Gotaas-Larsen for 22 years after working at Norske Veritas.

At Gotaas-Larsen, he became co-managing director with Richard Fain, the current CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, in 1977 and was sole managing director from 1988 to 1993. He continued at Gotaas-Larsen as executive chairman until 1995.

Then he suddenly quit the company and many believed at the time there were major differences between Clausen and the company owners, London-born Frederick and David Barclay.
