Top Indian seafarers associations plan to challenge a judgment by a Kolkata tribunal to tax crew on foreign-flagged ships.
According to a joint statement by Maritime Union of India (MUI) and National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), the unprecedented decision has "shattered" the workforce of the Indian maritime industry.
The unions add that the judgment now mandates around 1.3m previously exempted Indian seafarers to pay tax in the country.
