China’s accelerating push to clean up the environment is set to drive-up shiprepair costs.
Under new rules, the country’s shipyards will no longer be allowed to sandblast vessels to remove paint and rust from hulls and cargo holds due to the pollutants it creates and health hazards it poses to shipyard workers.
Instead, yards will be required to use hydro-blasting that could double their costs, according to industry experts.
