Five global shipping industry groups are urging the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to adopt a data collection system before adding to regulations on carbon dioxide emissions.
Bimco, the International Chamber of Shipping, Intercargo, Intertanko and World Shipping Council says their proposal represents a unified response to the Paris Agreement on climate change implemented earlier this month.
Precursor to more rules
"The joint industry submission calls on IMO member states to finalise the adoption of a global CO2 data collection system for international shipping, as a precursor to the consideration of possible next steps to address the sector's CO2 emissions," the groups said.
