The master of a panamax bulk carrier has been fined AUD 18,000 ($16,000) for failing to promptly report defects affecting the seaworthiness or safety of the vessel.
The 74,000-dwt Ocean Emperor (built 1998) experienced repeated engine breakdowns off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in July.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority reported that the unnamed master of the Ocean Emperor pleaded guilty to six offences under the country’s navigation act for failing to report machinery defects as soon as practicable between the 22 and 29 July.
