Tokyo-based bulk carrier owner, Daiichi Chuo Kisen Kaisha has reported a loss of JPY 3.99bn ($52.6m) for the six months to 30 September.
This compares with a profit of a similar amount in the same period last year.
Daiichi is forecasting a full year loss of JPY 3.8bn.
In a statement it pointed out that while Japan’s economy has been recovering since the earthquake in March the appreciation of the Yen and the high oil price is restricting further domestic growth.
