Fuel oil leaking from the wreck of the chemical tanker which exploded in the Brazilian port of Paranagua on Monday is threatening the local environment.

The Chilean-flag, 17,465-dwt Vicuna (built 1983) was carrying 1,240 tonnes of intermediate fuel oil and 156 tonnes of marine diesel when it blew up at a terminal while discharging a cargo of methanol. Two crewmen, a superintendent and a surveyor were killed in the blasts on the tanker owned by Ultragas of Chile.
