A Japanese shipowner was quick to alert the US authorities when a ship began leaking fuel oil in American waters.
The Panamanian-flag,11,464-dwt Fortune Epoch (1995) was carrying machinery parts from Savannah with its next scheduled port of call in Philadelphia when the leak began.
The ship reported the leak to the US Coast Guard while it was anchored off Savannah on Wednesday morning.
