Australian group Toll Holdings has confirmed it will sub-charter a P& O ro-ro to beef up its New Zealand ferry operations.

It said on Tuesday it would take the 1,600-passenger Stena Challenger (built 1995) for five years from August, operating in the Cook Strait.

There will be an option for a further three years.

Sweden's Stena is currently chartering the 22,400-gt vessel on a short-term lease from P&O, while another ferry is being converted.
