The number of dead and missing from reported tanker incidents in the first six months of this year is already more than twice last year’s total.
The first-half figure of 44 dead and missing compiled by the tanker owners’ organisation Intertanko compares with 21 for the whole of 2003 and 16 in 2002.
Almost half the six-months’ figure comprises the 21 crewmen killed when the 40,000-dwt Odfjell chemical carrier Bow Mariner (built 1982) exploded and sank in February during tank-cleaning.
