An investigation is under way in Port Taranaki in New Zealand into why a cargo tank or ballast tank on a Japanese methanol tanker imploded, ripping the deck open.
Nobody was hurt in the incident which occurred on Tuesday as the 1994-built, Singapore-flag Perla was loading 250,000 litres of methanol at Newton King Tanker Teminal in the North Island port. The implosion left a metre-long tear in the steel deck.
