A new six-year labour contract covering US east coast and gulf coast ports will go into effect today, after a court opted to throw out a last-minute challenge to the deal.
District court judge Victor Marrero dismissed a request by dissident longshoremen for an injunction preventing the contract taking effect.
The dockworkers claimed members’ voting rights had been violated when the deal was ratified in June.
International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) president John Bowers described the agreement as ‘the greatest and strongest ILA contract in our history’.
