Their refusal is being seen as a serious obstacle to attempts to discover why and how the chemical tanker blew up and sank with the presumed loss of 21 lives. Three bodies were recovered after the blast on February 28, with a further 18 missing presumed dead.
Reports in the US media say the four have, in effect, taken the Fifth Amendment, the right of a defendant not to answer any question that may incriminate them.
