Aviva, the UK insurer, has paid a claim of over $3m for the cargo on the chemical tanker Bow Mariner which sank and exploded off the US east coast earlier this year.

The claim covered the 11,000 tonnes of industrial ethanol which the 40,000-dwt Odfjell-Seachem tanker was carrying en route from New Jersey to Houston when it suffered a catastrophic series of explosions during tank-cleaning operations on February 28.
