Australian ship services firm ASP Ship Management has clinched the contest to buy the Georgian Ocean Shipping Company, according to comments by the country’s prime minister this afternoon.

ASP will pay a reported $161m for the shipowner, of which $72m will cover Georgia Ocean's debts. The remainder will go into the state coffers.

The new buyer has pledged to continue employing Georgian seamen and keep all existing employers for a period of at least 12 years.
