Expanding Egyptian ferry operator United Maritime Egypt (UME) has acquired a second Baltic-based ropax ferry in the space of two months.
Through UME Shipping, a United Arab Emirates-registered subsidiary, it has bought the 17,000-gt ropax ferry Wasa Express (built 1981) from Finnish/Swedish shipowner Kvarken Link, which operates under the trade name Wasaline.
Commenting on the deal, Wasaline managing director Captain Peter Stahlberg said the deal to sell the Wasa Express was concluded on 16 December and it would be handed over to UME once the company’s 23,700-gt ropax newbuilding Aurora Botnia is delivered by shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions in May 2021.
