TUI UK has sold the oldest cruiseship operated by its Marella cruise brand for recycling.
It is one of a growing number of cruiseships facing the chop.
Ownership of the 33,900-gt cruiseship Marella Celebration (built 1984) has quietly passed to Rota Shipping, a Turkish controlled company that acquires vessels for onward sale for scrap, according to IHS Markit data.
Greek shipping observers tell Tradewinds that the Marella Celebration has been in cold lay-up in an anchorage near Piraeus since Marella prematurely withdrew it from service in April due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
