The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) will begin operating a long-mooted passenger and cargo service to the Maldives next month.

The service is the first such international combination liner service the Indian shipping giant has operated since it discontinued passenger/cargo services to Singapore and the Indian Ocean island nations in the mid 1980s.

While Indian media have described the new route between Cochin and Male as a ferry service, there will be no ro-ro aspect to it.
