Italian shipowning pioneer Aldo Grimaldi has died at the age of 96.

A famous figure in the Genoa shipping community, he was known as "Dr Aldo."

The Corriere della Sera daily reported he died at home in Genoa on 7 December.

Grimaldi was the president of Grimaldi Holding and the nephew of shipowner Achille Lauro, on whose vessels he worked as a young man, going on to graduate in economics and maritime sciences.
