The number of containerships out of work reached a three-year high last week, according to data from analyst Alphaliner.
It said the inactive fleet now accounts for 6% of all vessels, or 1.38m teu in capacity.
This is partly explained by the large number of ships being withdrawn for scrubber retrofits.
A total of 90 boxships of 878,000 teu are in shipyards currently.
