Liner shipping is bracing for a fresh wave of port congestion, blank sailings and a worsening shortage of containers as a consequence of the Suez blockage.
Clearing the backlog of more than 350 ships from the canal is expected to take a matter of days, but the ripple effects could be felt for months as vessels carrying tens of thousands of containers arrive in European ports, adding problems of congestion at a time when freight rates are already at multi-year highs.
