Fast-growing Saudi Arabian container shipping newcomer Folk Maritime is making a move into ship ownership.

The company, backed by the country’s Public Investment Fund, has ambitions to buy secondhand ships and order newbuildings.

The Red Sea feeder and shortsea operator has purchased the 1,800-teu Vega Daytona (built 2023) for around $33m, say shipbroking sources — an increase of nearly one-third on the price of sister ships sold earlier in the year.
