CMA CGM says it will “revolutionise shipping” through a strategic partnership with tech giant Google.

The world’s third-largest liner said the two partners would accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across its worldwide operations, helping to optimise vessel routes, container handling and inventory management, as well as reduce cost and carbon footprints.

“This comprehensive collaboration aims to revolutionise shipping by enhancing efficiency, responsiveness and adaptability to market fluctuations and disruptions,” CMA CGM added.

It said the collaboration is part of its strategy to transform its business through AI innovation.

That has led the French company to invest in other tech ventures including Mistral AI, Poolside, Dataiku and the open science lab Kyutai.

It will initially be tested by CMA CGM’s Ceva Logistics, focusing on warehouse management.

It will also extend to the use of AI in day-to-day working with the media.

Digital road map

“This collaboration aligns with our digital road map and investments, marking a crucial step in our transformation strategy,” said CMA CGM chief executive Rodolphe Saade.

“Together with Google, we will lead the digital revolution in shipping, logistics and media, optimise our processes and enhance our competitive edge.

“We are committed to driving innovation with tangible benefits for our staff members and our customers.”

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, said: “Combining CMA CGM’s deep expertise in shipping and logistics with Google’s AI tools and secure infrastructure, we can help CMA CGM digitally transform its own operations and those of its customers.

“This partnership is a prime example of how AI can assist employees, improve customer outcomes and revolutionise industries.”

CMA CGM said the partnership would extend to training sessions at Tangram, its centre for learning and innovation.
