Two Asian boxships have sustained serious damage in a collision in Vietnam.
The accident involving Wan Hai Lines’ 2,038-teu sub-panamax Wan Hai 288 (built 2021) and the Kotoku Kaiun-operated 920-teu feeder ship Resurgence (built 2002) happened in the Long Tau river in Ho Chi Minh City.
Photos released by the city’s maritime police showed the Wan Hai vessel with a gash in its hull above the water line on the port side, and mangled boxes above the area of impact.
The Japanese vessel’s bow is shown with a huge chunk missing.
On Saturday evening, the Port Authority of Ho Chi Minh City said the Wan Hai 288 had been towed to Cat Lai for a re-inspection after the accident.
The vessel remained moored there on Monday morning.
If passed as safe, the ship is expected to return to Cai Mep to discharge its containers and then undergo repairs.
The Wan Hai 288 had been due to head to Kaohsiung in Taiwan.
The ship was moving out of the port at the time of the accident, while the Resurgence was heading into Ho Chi Minh City.
No injuries or pollution were reported, and navigation in the area was not affected.
No cause revealed
The Resurgence also remained moored in the port on Monday morning.
Authorities have not yet announced a cause for the incident, but an investigation has begun.
Both ships have insurance cover through the Britannia Club.
