The United States and Russia want to have safer Arctic shipping with a plans for new shipping lanes through the Bering Strait.

The two countries have submitted a proposal to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) that would establish six new two-way routes and six precautionary areas in the Bering Sea and Bering Strait for vessels above 400 gross tonnes.

The routes, which straddle waters off the coasts of Alaska and the Chukotskiy Peninsula, would help ships avoid shoals, reefs and islands outside the routes and to reduce the potential for marine casualties and environmental disasters, the US Coast Guard said.
