The US believes Iran was likely behind Tuesday's boarding of a bitumen carrier in the Gulf of Oman, despite Iran denying any involvement.
Speaking at a state department press conference, spokesman Ned Price confirmed the intruders had left the 9,700-dwt Asphalt Princess (built 1976), echoing previous statements made by UK Maritime Trade Operations.
"We believe that these personnel were Iranian, but we're not in position to confirm this at this time," Price said.
