Leading shipping organisations have agreed to shrink the Indian Ocean high-risk area, which was introduced at the peak of the Somalia piracy attacks against shipping in 2010.
The extensive high-risk area in the Indian Ocean was introduced to identify the areas in which shipowners, operators and seafarers should exercise extra vigilance.
However, Somali pirate groups have not been active since 2017 and other danger areas, such as piracy off West Africa, have emerged as a more immediate threat to shipping companies.
