A spate of crew kidnappings in the Gulf of Guinea in recent months has raised questions over what can be done to protect seafarers in the region dubbed shipping’s most dangerous waters.
December alone saw 47 crew reported kidnapped for ransom in four separate, well-organised pirate attacks.
Three other attempted hijackings were thwarted.
The indications are that pirate attacks are becoming more sophisticated and highly organised.
