One of three seafarers who went missing after a ro-ro sank in the Kurushima Strait last week was confirmed dead on Sunday.
Japanese news outlets reported that Takahiro Kamihata, the second engineer of the 11,454-ton Byakko (built 2020) was found in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest in the steering room of the vessel by a rescue team.
An executive of Prince Kaiun, the operator of the Byakko, confirmed the report and said the search continued for the other two missing crew – the ship’s master and the first engineer.
