German’s new coalition government has been urged to ratify the IMO’s Hong Kong convention on ship scrapping to accelerate improvement of poor environmental and labour standards in demolition market.
Alfred Hartmann, president of German shipowners’ association VDR, said the Hong Kong deal was more suited to lifting standards in the global ship scrapping market than the rival European regional rules due to come into force at the end of this year.
