Finnish technology group Wartsila says it is to install the first hybrid propulsion system on a bulker.
The kit will be retrofitted on Marfin Management's 60,000-dwt Paolo Topic (built 2016) at Onomichi Dockyard in Japan, making it the world's most advanced dry cargoship, the company claimed.
The Wartsila HY module will ensure the "seamless integration and control of the technologies to be installed, with the ship’s various existing power production systems," Wartsila said.
