Safe Bulkers is looking to the shipyards as part of its ongoing mission to renew its fleet with energy-efficient vessels.
Since October, the New York-listed owner has ordered a second newbuilding that meets the latest requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for greenhouse gas emissions.
The standard, known as EEDI Phase 3, aims to reduce emissions by 30% compared to the 2008 baseline.
