The US will impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports and later this week will apply reciprocal levies on goods from other countries that impose tariffs on US exports.
US President Donald Trump announced the new measures on Sunday, the same day that Chinese tariffs on US goods came into effect.
Canada, China and Mexico are the biggest exporters of steel and aluminium products to the US, most of which are imported overland.
