Imabari Shipbuilding’s new dock at Marugame marks a significant move that will confirm the family owned shipbuilder as Japan’s largest and position it to challenge the South Korean and Chinese giants.

The estimated $400m investment in a 610-metre-long dock equipped with three 1,330-ton Goliath cranes is the first new shipbuilding facility in Japan since Imabari constructed a similar-sized dock at Saijo 17 years ago.
