A Maersk Line containership has been refloated after running aground on Tuesday off the Italian coast.
The 9,000-teu Gustav Maersk (built 2008) suffered the casualty in the Strait of Messina off Reggio Calabria, on the country's southern coast. The ship was manoeuvring to disembark a local pilot at the time of the incident.
A statement by the Italian coastguard said the Vessel Traffic Service at Messina warned the ship of a "dangerous approach" but measures to correct the course were insufficient to prevent the grounding.
