Ransom payments to pirates are not against public policy, a UK court has ruled as a Swiss trader lost an appeal related to the hijacking of an MISC tanker.
Somali pirates are also not terrorists and ransoms do not constitute bribes, Wednesday’s Court of Appeal ruling against Masefield AG found.
The trader had previously been defeated in London’s High Court in February after taking the case against insurer Amlin over the hijacking of the 32,170-dwt chemical tanker Bunga
