Nicaragua’s government has approved the environmental impact statement for a plan by China’s HKND to build a canal across the Central American country.

Work on the $50bn project to create a rival to the Panama Canal could start next year, the said the company, which is controlled by Chinese billionaire Wang Jin.

“A rigorous analysis carried out by the government has confirmed the [environmental impact statement’s] finding that the canal will result in a net positive social and environmental impact,” HKND said in a statement, according to various media outlets.
