Five Somali pirates were found guilty on Wednesday of an ill-advised April Fools’ Day assault on a US warship.



The conviction is no joke for the men in their twenties, however, as they each now face life in a US prison.

The pirates must have thought they had found a chink in the USS Nicholas' armour.

Three of the men were apprehended after they opened fire on the on what they believed was a merchant ship in the early hours of 1 April west of the Seychelles.



The
