Bugbee, who is based in Manhattan wherehe serves as president of Scorpio Tankers, is due to receive the Stamford,Connecticut-based non-profit’s highest honour at a Gala Dinner that will markthe conclusion of organisation’s annual three-day conference and expo on 19March 2014.
In a statement the CMA applauded theexecutive’s contributions to the development and growth of the shippingindustry over the course of a career that spans three decades and a variety ofdifferent sectors, from oil and gas to dry-bulk.
Ole Skaruup was the first recipient ofthe commodore award in 1990. Today, the list of successors includes the likesof John Fredriksen, Morten Arntzen, Angeliki Frangou, Philippe Louis-Dreyfusand Peter Evensen, the 2013 honouree.
According to a CMA spokesman the processof choosing the commodore is “fairly straight forward”. He says nominees are submittedby members throughout the year but claims the ultimate decision is left to thepresident and board.
“Thisyear the choice was so clear cut,” he added. “Robert and his team were sodynamic at what they were doing [with Scorpio], when you added the frequentcameos and serious speaking contributions Robert had made over the years to theCMA, it was an obvious choice.”
