The number of Greek seafarers enlisting on merchant ships rose for a second consecutive year, to reach its highest level since the start of the millennium.
Expansion in maritime employment is seen as evidence that years of recession are pushing more and more Greeks to pursue a career at sea.
The number of Greek nationals embarked on commercial vessels jumped to 15,968 in 2017 from 14,313 the previous year — a rise of almost 12%, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat).
